Lecture 8
From Novice to Expert

A person can identify how good or bad they in a particular subject by placing themselves on the novice to expert scale.

A novice is somebody who is new to a field or activity and have little knowledge on the subject. This may necessarily mean they need to be supervised and attended to if they are struggling with learning the subject. They also need to connect their minimal knowledge to practice to develop a deeper understanding and move further up the scale.

An expert is a person with extensive knowledge or ability based on research, experience or occupation in a particular area of study. An expert is able to take responsibility for going beyond existing standards and creating own interpretations.

I believe you cannot put a limit on the understanding of your subject, even an expert will continue to learn, expand and build on their knowledge. An expert within design, will need to keep up to date with the development of technology, meaning they may have to learn new ways to approach tasks they class themselves to be an expert in, differently.

I have minimal experience in graphic communication in comparrison to a designer who classes themselves as an expert in the area, and has been in the industry for so many years. Although,I have studied the subject up to a BTEC Foundation Diploma level, so I am prepared to take on challenges within graphic communication and I am aware of how to use some equipment to fulfill the task. For the reason, I have some knowledge on the area and I am still currently learning, I would class myself as a beginner.
