Lecture 4
Research

Research is an investigation into a subject where we can discover facts and theories to apply to our work process. It develops our thoughts and ideas and is an essential part of problem solving - if one idea is not successful, we are able to research for another. Research can be identified as two forms, primary and secondary research. Primary data is created when there is no previous source available where as secondary data already exists and is readily available for the researchers - this data being created and collected from other organisations and publications. Research can be explored visually in addition to documenting notes and annotation. Visual research assists the practice of creating and generating first potential ideas. This can be in the form of sketches, illustrations, diagrams
Practioner's carry out their research differently to suit their preferred method or subject matter. They can carry out their research by sketching, collecting and surrounding themselves with inspiration.
Research should continue to be carried out throughout your work process. It allows you to see if the ideas have been done before and how you can generate new ways to make it your own. You will discover new work processes that will assist and identify your unique style.

Inspiration

Inspiration is a burst of creativity that every designer is challenged by the majority of their lives. A designer can have so many years of experience and still be inspired to create something new. We can discover inspiration from our surroundings. As a designer we need to be open to what is around us and break out of any certain conventions to gather inspiration. Take risks and be prepared to document your inspiration for future use. This does not necessarily mean limiting yourself to looking at previous artists work but listening to music, collecting objects, taking photographs, reading books can inspire and trigger new ideas. The more you collect the fresher and unique your idea will become. Any idea created from your inspiration will need to be documented in the form of sketches or notes for you to develop further. You can gather this inspiration in a sketchbook or reflective visual journal, which shall echo your thoughts and interests within your personal practice.
