Interpretation
Time and place has a great effect on production in terms of the content and making of the work. Illustrators interpretation on the content or message will differ depending on how they select, respond and use the zeitgeist of their time. The term zeitgeist can be referred to the ideas in the spirit of time, period or place and can be expressed through art, literature, philosophy and religion. The various interpretations of Alice and Wonderland are great examples to show how illustrators capture the zeitgeist of their time.
Not all illustrators viusalise a character in the same way therefore it will always be interpreted differently.
The colour's have been used the same way although for a different reason. This image was influenced by the 60s drug culture therefore the colour's are used to reflect on that time and era. As well as an intense use of vibrant colour, a disproportional scale, surrealism and 'tripping' imagery have been used to capture and reflect the zeitgeist of that time and period. We can see how illustrators interpretations change due to the change and improvement in technology. Alice and wonderland began with quick sketches for book illustration, growing into a range of multimedia, films, games and photography projects. Here Annie Leibovitz uses Alice in Wonderland as an inspiration for fashion clothing and photography. Turning the unusual, and unlikely events into reality. Similarly, the film Malice in wonderland concentrates on the personality's of the characters portraying them in a realistic human figure. Targeted at adults, giving Alice and Wonderland a much more sinister feel.
Here I have created my own interpretation of an illustrators work. Teagan White originally created the typography for this book cover for Veronika Simunovic, an adult fiction book about love and guilt. Where as I have looked at it from a different perspective creating a whole new meaning and reason for the piece. I introduced a new colour scheme, and shapes to add my own touch to the piece. I have incorporated the design into a magazine layout carrying the design onto a second page. It shows how the design can be interpreted differently when changing the medium. Also, the piece shows how it can be interpreted differently when changing the audience.

Illustrators and designers use numerous platforms to help enhance communication between their work and their audience. If the same design was to be used over several platforms, the design may need to be altered to suit the scale of each platform. For example, small text on a brochure may not be needed for a billboard advertisement, as people driving past will not have time to read it. Most popular platforms illustrators will use are the following:
-Editorial
magazines, journals, newspapers
-Publishing
all forms of printed media including books, brochures, poster
-Online
animation
-Advertising and Branding
Above and below the line
-Textiles and Fashion
Patterns for fabric, wallpaper, clothing
-Installation and Interventions
Retail and architectural project
Illustrator Kate Moross has worked over a range of platforms. Creating work for other companies, helps advertise the company but also yourself as an illustrator. Working with a variety of companies over several platforms can also introduce your work to a new audience. Kate Moross has created artwork for shops she has opened as well as clothing brands such as diesel and Topshop. Kate Moross has created a fashion line for Topshop extending her range and allowing customers to wear her work as well as view it. Whether she works on an installation, or billboard we can still recognise her work from her unique illustrative style.
